We code less because we write more efficient code, and we know not to write the same function twelve times with infinitesimal variations.
More importantly it’s we señor developers who can think above the level of the current line and grasp the whole function, file, feature, the whole project.
People under a certain age have grown up not reading books as we did but channel surfing and gaming. They can’t really concentrate which is why they’re more focused on writing tests than writing code. This is a qualitative difference and has more to do with the respective cultures we grew up in than our seniority.
And it’s not as though their managers will ever help them focus; their day will begin with a wearying rush hour commute to attend an utterly pointless “standup” which will be the first of many interruptions, er, meetings that day.
