Most developers’ introduction to the industry is in a whiteboard interview where they are told to write hyper-optimized screaming fast code. They come away thinking this is the only factor that matters.
It’s astonishing how much compulsive behavior permeates our industry and it has only gotten worse. The methodologies are complete wastes of time and stifle creativity and productivity yet nearly everyone uses them.
Code was illegible in 1989 and its more illegible now.
I used to really enjoy programming. I wouldn’t last a week working with scrum. I’d leave a sprint retrospective on a stretcher or in handcuffs.
