I’ve only heard about mob programming once, whoever came up with that deserves to be buried alive. The guy who told me about it said that about half the people doing it looked completely miserable. I don’t wonder.

I’ve stayed in touch with a few of my former managers. One of them was at a company that was goo-goo over these fads and they had all the developers pair-program; after a few days of it a delegation consisting of all the senior devs came to him and said that if the pairing continued they were all quitting. And this wasn’t a great time to be out of work.

The junior developers who didn’t have the experience and confidence to make such an ultimatum had to go on doing it; several of them ended up in therapy.

Like me. Eleven years after a single three-hour session I was still getting anxiety attacks, and I’m not exactly what anyone would call delicate. I’m a weightlifter and I’ve been in three very bad car accidents that I don’t think about for years at a time.

The same Beck guy behind that TDD horseshit is one of the originators of XP, I figure he’s some kind of sadist.
