I've never read a coding standards doc, other than the ones I wrote, that had a word to say about legibility. All they cared about was consistancy (sic). Some of them even required ( this ) shit, to which I said I'd quit before I did that. Legibility was bad back in 1988 when we all worked in C but it's gotten steadily worse, not better. And people are STILL doing early returns.
