In most projects I’ve worked on the code was obfuscated when I first saw it. Illegible, jagged, cluttered. It’s a point of honor to the writer that nobody else can read it, this has been standard in the industry for decades.

Individual developers call it personal coding style. Companies and teams call it their coding standard.
