I have an issue with that R word, perhaps you can help me.

If I see eight different usages, they mean eight different things.

Distilling out what little commonality I can find, it seems to be a synonym for "edit."

I have a lifelong preoccupation with precision in speech, in fact I didn't even start talking until after age three and I had some grasp of grammar, and I can't bring myself to use this R word.

My first exposure to it was to be bludgeoned with it for reformatting some illegible code into readability, and people were angered because I had "refactored" it.. They were of course Olde School types who thought making code legible was effete.

I've seen it used to mean "change the interface but not the implementation."

I've seen it used to mean "change the implementation but not the .interface"

I've seen it used to mean "change both."

I can't use a word whose meaning is as slippery as an eel, no matter how intelligent it sounds.

Yet people are writing articles about it, and even books.

I could use it if the definition would solidify.

OTOH I will never use "stories" unless I'm talking about bedtime for children.
