Being a man of titanium oxide complexion with an excellent chance of surviving a traffic stop I cannot presume to speak for anyone for whom a traffic stop entails a serious probability of death.

But I am also a gay man with some exposure to gay Republicans (most of it thankfully not in person) and this is a similarly perplexing conundrum with which I have a little experience. Why, I wonder; why, I ask them, would you ever hold allegiance to people who despise you? I do hope you are sitting down as you read that I have never had a satisfactory answer.

But I can honestly report one interesting fact: these Log Cabin types spend more of their day justifying their loyalties than a transvestite spends looking at him/her/themself in the mirror. They do it aloud, they do it in print, they probably grab other gay people by the collar and yell their excus — er, rationalizations in their faces.

They are the most overtly conflicted people I have ever met.
