Back when we wrote software instead of practicing methodologies and writing unit tests we had none of this stuff; this article would have been unintelligible as it was to me, and we did better work, a lot more of it, and had a lot fewer bugs. The obsession with methodologies is one huge justification for interruptions and pressure to work 70 hours a week.
