As long as I've been following politics, even longer than the time since I came out as gay, I have never understood why any gay person would vote for a Republican but many do. They're conflicted; they'll spend a significant part of every day repeating justifications for their allegiances, but I can't help seeing them as disgraceful.
Someone recently burglarized is likely to see crime as too important an issue for bigotry to override it.
I may be simplistic here but I can't help but regard contemporary conservatism as simply vile. It has no wholesomeness or virtue and embraces cruelty as its ideal. I guess that has some appeal to all kinds of people. Not just white ones.
